Six years after being charged for statutory rape of a 15 – year – old girl, former President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Colwyn King was on Friday freed of the charge.

King’s trial began earlier this week before a 12-member jury in the Georgetown High Court.

Ten of the 12 jurors presented a not guilty verdict while the other two voted guilty.

The verdict was returned to Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry this afternoon.

He was represented by Attorney At Law Darren Wade, who joined the case while it was already in progress.  King who served for several years as the head of the GTU cross-examined a number of the witnesses.

Mr. Wade called no witnesses in the case, however some eight witnesses appeared on behalf of the state.

According to Wade, King was allowed to give a statement in the matter from the prisoner’s docks.

Sources from inside the Courtroom said when Justice Sewnarine-Beharry declared the 10 to 2 not guilty judgement she also told King that he may have gotten away from man but he cannot get away from God.

The allegations which first surfaced in October 2009 are that the teen was taken to purchase food and then taken to a hotel on Princes Street, where there was allegedly some sexual activity.

The girl was picked up by a police patrol on Sheriff Street while wandering. It was established that she was sexually active.
