Four suspected car thieves remanded to jail over stolen vehicles and car parts

Following the arrest of 13 persons during a Police operation in Kuru Kururu that unearthed stolen vehicles and car parts, four of those arrested have been charged and remanded to jail.

18-year-old mechanic, Justin DE Santos, 25-year-old taxi drivers Joe Singh and Miguel Materdeen and 33-year-old mechanic Kurt Shepard appeared before the Chief Magistrate to face a number of charges.

They were charged jointly with the theft of three vehicles. The men denied the allegation.

The charge sheet read that on the 12th October at Section C’ Turkeyen, the four stole one Toyota Sprinter worth $700,000 from its owner, Dwayne Simon.

The four are also accused of stealing a motorcar belonging to Oswald Benton of Vigilance on the 23rd of September. That car was valued at $500,000.

The Court also heard that the four men also stole a Toyota mini-bus belonging to Orlanda Angus of Diamond Housing Scheme on the 18th September. The value of the bus is $4.1 million.

The Attorney for one of the accused claimed that the man was forced to confess to the crime. He also claimed that his client was abused by the Police.

The Magistrate denied bail to all four of the accused as the Court was told that other charges are likely to be filed against them.
