Four suspected pirates were today charged and remanded to prison in front of their weeping family members following a $4.6 M armed robbery.
18-year-old Sanjay Jangbir, 19-year-old Rajendra Parsoran, 22-year-old Vishnu Jangbir and 25-year-old Mahendra Sancharan, all stood before a City Magistrate with a grim look on their faces as they were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.
The charge stated on the 19th February, while being armed with guns and cutlasses, the four men in the Guyana’s Territorial Waters robbed Bikash Balkissoon of his yamaha boat engine along with several other items which included $450,000 worth in Gasoline.
In all, the man was robbed of $4.6 million in belongings.
The Attorney representing the four accused told the Court that his clients were severely beaten by officers into signing a caution statement.
One of the accused claimed that one cop even went to the extent of telling him that if he signed the caution statements, he would get his freedom.
That freedom was however not granted.
All of the accused appeared in Court with support from their relatives who could be seen weeping throughout the appearance.
The Police Prosecutor strongly objected to bail based on the serious nature of the charge and the fact that weapons were used in the commission of the robbery.
He further noted that several caution statements were given on the day of the arrest.
Just last week, another accused was charged and remanded for the same robbery and he is expected to be jointly charged with the four who appeared in Court today.
All of the men have been remanded to jail and will make their next Court appearance next week.
