Four years in jail for man who swallowed over 2 pounds of cocaine in small packets

One week after being nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA),by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), a Cummings Lodge man who swallowed more than 2 pounds of cocaine in small packets was sentenced to jail today.

When 38-year-old, Julius Fidel Watkins appeared in Court this morning, he opted to plead guilty to the cocaine trafficking charges.  He was sentenced to four years in jail and fined $2.5 Million.

The Court was told that the man was taken off a Canada bound flight after drug investigators received information about him and his possible involvement as a drug mule.

He was taken to a City Hospital where an x-ray confirmed the presence of more than 100 small packages in his body.

He spent four days in hospital and excreted a total of 114 cocaine filled pellets that he had swallowed in an effort to get the cocaine out of Guyana. The total weight of the excreted packets of cocaine was just over two pounds.

When asked to explain in court why he committed the act, the convict stated that he made the attempt in an effort to support his four children.  He apologised to the Court and begged for mercy.  The mercy he was offered turned out to be four years in jail and the fine of $2.5 million.
