Gaming Authority urged to ensure all gambling agencies are in full compliance with local laws

As Guyana’s economy is evolving, the Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joe Harmon is urging the Guyana Gaming Authority to fulfill its mandate and ensure that all gambling agencies are in full compliance with the Laws of Guyana.

This morning, Mr. Harmon delivered remarks at a stakeholder’s meeting of the Guyana Gaming Authority. The meeting focused on “responsible gaming in Guyana”.

Mr. Harmon told the stakeholders that as the country’s economy continues to diversify with the introduction of the gaming industry, the Gaming Authority will find itself coming under pressure for the licensing and regulation of such bodies.

“This is very important at this phase of our development, as the pace of our economy is moving at the pace at which it is moving, I could anticipate that there is going to be tremendous pressure on the Authority for license for gaming establishment”.

He said the body must carry out its mandate in keeping with its regulations and the laws of the country.

The Government Official said that apart from the Gaming Authority, the wider society must also play a role in ensuring that all are protected from the harms of the industry.

The Government, he said, will play its part by enhancing the capacity of the Gaming Authority and further reviewing the legislation that covers the industry.

He noted that the gambling industry is seen as a form of entertainment but there is also some responsibility that must remain intact.

Harmon indicated that the Government will continue to ensure the proper regulation of the industry as the Authority for gaming carries out its work and functions.

Over the past few years, a number of gaming companies have opened up operations in Guyana and there are others that are likely to come.

The businesses would have to adhere to strict rules that govern the industry including the proper licensing of the operations. The Gaming Authority has found itself before the Courts with at least one operator that it claims may not be properly licensed.
