GAWU will not be cowed by propaganda and false narratives about sugar industry -Union President

President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union, Seepaul Narine is standing firm behind the sugar workers who recently staged protest actions at two estates, making it clear that GAWU will not be deterred in its calls for workers to be respected.

In a letter to the press addressing recent criticism of the protest by workers, Mr. Narine said the real problem is that the union is not ignoring the real challenges in the industry and those who are responsible for those challenges.

He added that GAWU will not be cowed by propaganda and false narratives, reminding that GAWU and the sugar workers have a proud history of standing up and raising their voices.

The union has been lambasting the current management at GuySuCo blaming the management for the current state of the industry and its many problems.

Just recently, GAWU pointed to the low first crop for sugar for this year, which was recorded as the lowest first crop in the company’s history.

GAWU has been pressing the government to make changes to the management of the sugar company and has singled out the CEO Sasenarine Singh over what the union sees as poor management at GuySuCo.

While admitting that there are real issues facing the industry, the Government has held its hand on making any changes to the top management at GuySuCo.

Instead, the President has been talking about the billions invested in the sugar company since he took office two years ago.
