GDF dismisses four ranks over rape allegations; Three to face charges

The Guyana Defence Force announced today that it has dismissed four of its ranks for seriously breaching operational orders while deployed on border duties. The Force said the disciplinary process is ongoing against the others.

Of the four who have been dismissed, three will face rape charges in the Courts, while the file for the fourth suspect is still with the DPP.

Two weeks ago, the GDF commissioned a Board of Inquiry following the allegations of rape that was made against the ranks who were stationed in a Region One community.

The GDF said the Board of Inquiry probed the circumstances which led to the allegation of rape being leveled against some of its ranks.

The probe led to disciplinary actions being taken against two officers and four other ranks.

“The BOI found that the ranks seriously breached operational orders”, the GDF said in its statement.

The Guyana Defence Force added that its ranks are expected to follow certain values and standards of the Force and therefore their conduct and professionalism are of paramount importance.

According to the GDF, the defence and security of the nation and citizens are tasks that the force will always aim to execute with the highest moral, ethical and professional standards.

The soldiers were stationed at a Mabaruma location as part of the efforts to increase border patrol.
