GDF launches internal probe into “excessive initiation beatings” of new officers

The Guyana Defence Force has launched an internal investigation into the initiation beating of a number of new officers of the Force who were recently commissioned.

The initiation usually forms part of the “welcome into the Force”, but this year, senior officers are concerned that those involved in the incident went too far.

A number of the new officers had to be taken to the hospital to seek medical attention for various injuries.

A young doctor who is a reserve officer is likely to undergo surgery for an injury to his eye and there are reports of some other young officers suffering from fractured bones and bruises to their bodies.

“They really overdo it this time”, an Officer told News Source, as he explained that the initiation is not meant to be violent and taken to a stage of injuries that would require hospitalization.

In past years, the initiation exercise would involve the new members being awakened with buckets of water and soap in socks lashes.

But in recent years, it has become more violent with reported instances of pieces of wood being used to beat the new officers.

News Source understands that reports of the most recent incident reached the top brass of the Force and an immediate investigation was ordered and is currently ongoing.
