The Guyana Elections Commission held its first statutory meeting under the Chairmanship of Justice Claudette Singh today.
The meeting came one day after the ruling by Chief Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire, who declared that the ongoing house-to-house registration by the Elections Commission is not illegal and that she could not set a date for elections.
Today’s meeting did not make any decisions about the ongoing registration exercise since the Commission is still to receive the full written ruling by the Chief Justice.
However, according to Commissioner Vincent Alexander, during today’s meeting, the Commission was briefed on the registration exercise by the GECOM Secretariat.
It was reported to the Commission that over 230,000 persons have already been registered during so far as the exercise continues.
He said the Commission was also advised about preparations for elections training to begin shortly.
“We got an update on house-to-house and we got an update on preparations for elections and what has been undertaken so far. The question on the way forward in some regards was not determined in the main because we are still not recipients of the decision of the Judge”, he explained.
Mr. Alexander said the Commission has agreed that it will await the written ruling of the Court and will meet again to discuss the way forward. He is hoping that the meeting could take place before next Tuesday.
