GECOM calls in Police as H2H registration staff complain of threats

The Guyana Elections Commission has called in the Police as its field staff continues to face threats and injuries from persons who are against the house-to-house registration exercise.

In a statement today, GECOM said it is in receipt of several reports of threats and intimidation from its field staff who are conducting House-to-House Registration.

The Commission said over the last few days, a number of enumerators were attacked and injured due to dog bites which were instigated by residents who are allegedly not in agreement with the registration exercise.

“It was also reported that some persons are using threatening language, instilling fear and providing misinformation that the staff will not be paid for their service”, the statement added.

The Commission said it has now made a move to engage the Guyana Police Force to provide surveillance in communities and to assist with the security of the field staff.

GECOM is urging citizens to desist immediately from threats and attacks against its staff.

It has made it clear that persons will be arrested and prosecuted.

Additionally, the Commission is also reminding citizens that the house-to-house registration exercise is a lawful exercise and if citizens need questions answered, they should contact the commission on telephone number 223-9653.
