GECOM Chair hoping for compromise from Commissioners after Court’s decision

Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission, Justice Claudette Singh is hoping that when the decision on the matters before the Court is handed down, the six Commissioners on the Elections Commission will find some compromise on the next step.

In a statement this afternoon, Justice Singh said it is important for all relevant parties to know that while GECOM is a constitutional agency, it is still subjected to the Laws of Guyana.

She said the mandatory injunction which was granted against the Commission has affected the finalization of its work at this point.

Justice Singh also noted that the Commission is cognizant of the sense of urgency with which it must do its work and it is anticipated that there will be a greater level of compromise by the six Commissioners in agreeing on the next steps after the decision of the Chief Justice.

The GECOM Chair has made it clear that she will not flout the Laws of Guyana.

Elections in Guyana took place on the 2nd March but the final results are still to be revealed.

As the results for Region Four were being tabulated and verified, the process was put on hold after some errors were discovered.

That led to a new process being put in place to verify the results and that system collapsed when the Commission took a second break from the process.

Region Four is the largest voting region with more than 45% of all electors residing in the region.
