GECOM Chair tells President Commission will be ready for elections by end of February 2020

The Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Justice Claudette Singh this morning informed President David Granger that the Guyana Elections Commission will be ready to host elections by the end of February of next year.

GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj announced on his Facebook page that he was informed of the Chairman’s decision and the information she dispatched to the President.

The President is now expected to name an election date based on that timeline that has been presented by the GECOM Chair.

The GECOM Chairman told the other Commissioners that she would have been informing the President of her decision this morning.

News Source understands that the President received a letter from the Chairman just after 10 o’ clock this morning, then the Chair informed the other members of the Commission of the contents of the letter.

The Opposition was pushing for elections to be held by the end of November, while the Government nominated Commissioners put forward a timeline for elections by March, with an earlier date possible.

On Wednesday, President David Granger said he was anxious to name an elections date since it was uncomfortable to be leading an interim government.
