GECOM Chairman to announce elections timeline on Thursday

The Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Justice Claudette Singh has informed the Commissioners that she will decide on the timeline for national elections and make an announcement by 10:30 on Thursday morning.

The Chairman’s position was conveyed to the Commissioners this afternoon at the end of a more than three-hour meeting at the Elections Commission.

Opposition Nominated Commissioners were tightlipped as they left the meeting and would only say that the announcement would come tomorrow morning.

Government nominated Commissioner Vincent Alexander explained that at today’s meeting, the Opposition nominated members of the Commission failed to provide their written proposal to support their contention for elections to be held by November. He said Government nominated Commissioner Charles Corbin presented a written proposal pointing to a March elections timeline with the possibility of that being moved forward to earlier in the new year.

“The end result is that the Chairman said she will make a determination and announcement by tomorrow. That came after the Commissioners nominated by the Leader of the Opposition failed to make a written proposal that was agreed to yesterday….all they contented was that elections should be held by November and they were not prepared to discuss anything else”, Alexander said.

He said the Chairman is likely to inform the Commissioners of her decision before moving on to inform the President of the timeline.

President Granger has indicated that he is prepared to announce a date for elections once the Commission informs him of its readiness.
