GECOM meets on Wednesday to prepare Elections timeline that could be presented to the President

The Guyana Elections Commission is set to meet again on Wednesday to finalise a possible timeline for elections that could be presented to the President.

The Chair and Commissioners met for over three hours this afternoon and a number of issues were examined.

Government nominated Commissioner Vincent Alexander told reporters that tomorrow’s meeting will continue to examine the elections timeline in collaboration with the work programme.

” I am still in the position where the outer time in the question of soonest is March and the inner time seems to be earlier in the new year”, Alexander said.

Alexander said, for now, it seems impossible that elections could be held before the end of this year with the number of things that are still to be done before such elections. He said even if there’s a fast-tracking of those requirements, there are still a number of statutory things that will have to be completed before elections and it is unlikely that any of those could be completed before the end of this year.

As the Elections Commission secretariat continues with the inputting of data from house to house registration, Mr. Alexander revealed that the encoding process will be done parallel with other elections preparations.

Opposition nominated Commissioner Sase Gunraj said there appears to be no good news again about the move to early elections. He said he is at a stage now where he is finding it difficult to even trust the secretariat of the Elections Commission.
