The Guyana Elections Commission is seeking the assistance of the Chief Immigration Officer to ascertain the validity of claims that ballots were cast for persons who may have been out of the country on elections day.

During the ongoing recount of votes, the APNU+AFC Coalition has made several claims of votes being cast for persons who were out of the country as well as for persons who are dead.

The Coalition has provided the Elections Commission with information regarding its claims about those who may have been out of the country.

Today, GECOM Commissioner Vincent Alexander said the information has been forwarded to the Chief Immigration Officer who would have a record of every person traveling through the various ports of entry and exit.

“With specific reference to the migrants, the information has been submitted and that has been forwarded to the Chief Immigration Officer and depending on the returns, we will be in a position to make a pronouncement. I think what the Chief Immigration Officer provide will be conclusive evidence on the matter and we can then provide and quantify what has occurred in that circumstance”, Alexander said.

Mr. Alexander added that the GECOM order speaks to the credibility of the elections being determined through the recount process and it is therefore it is his view that the claims will have to be examined.

This afternoon, APNU+AFC Executive Aubrey Norton said there are more cases of fraud being uncovered during the recount. He said there is now evidence of persons voting without an ID Card or swearing to an oath of identity and that is clearly fraud.

He said the evidence continues to be provided to the Elections Commission and it will be up to the Commission to act.
