As the Guyana Elections Commission prepares for general and regional elections in the new year, the Commission will begin the claims and objections period from the 1st October.

It will likely run over into the month of November. Commissioner Robeson Benn wanted a shorter period for claims and objections.

The decision was taken at today’s meeting of the Guyana Elections Commission.

The Commission also agreed that the qualifying date for the elections will be on the 31st December. Additionally, it was also agreed that the Commission will write to the US government and the Commonwealth for advisors for the elections.

Last week, the Chairman of the Elections Commission wrote President David Granger indicating that the Commission will be in a position to host elections by the end of February next year.

GECOM is still working with that timeline according to Commissioner Vincent Alexander.

President David Granger met with his Cabinet Ministers today and it was later announced that he will address the nation on Wednesday.

There have been calls for the President to name an elections date since he has been presented with a timeline from the Elections Commission.
