Georgetown Hospital nurses protest CEO’s removal of Matron

Dozens of patients were left unattended at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday when the dismissal of the Director of Nursing Services Colleen Hicks sparked a massive protest outside the facility.

Scores of Nurses and other health care professionals abandoned their patients and posts as they demanded the matron’s reinstatement.

News Source was informed that the dismissed Matron’s three-month probation ended on June 15 and the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Khan refused to have her confirmed in the position.

The matron, who seemed to have been well liked by the nursing staff, could not be reached directly. The protesting nurses were adamant that her dismissal was wrongful and without reason.

“We will stand here until the decision is rescinded, no more skullduggery” the nurses declared as they called for Khan’s resignation instead.

“Nurses form every department are out here, from maternity to medicine, to pediatric they are all here. Accident and emergency also they are here,” Senior Supervisor Keith Alonzo told News Source.

The hospitals nursing operations were no doubt affected by the protest action.

Khan could not be reached. News Source was told by his Secretary that he was taking part in an emergency meetings.

News Source understands that some department heads at the hospital did not agree with some of the changes that were put in place by the matron although the changes were fully supported by the nursing staff.
