GGMC officers shot at near Venezuela border

Two officers attached to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission were forced to seek cover after they came under fire on Friday afternoon while traversing the Cuyuni river close to the border with Venezuela.

The two officers were reportedly traveling from Eteringbang to conduct mining inspections in the Cuyuni river areas when gunshots were fired in their direction from the Venezuelan side of the border.

Sources close to the GGMC have explained that a similar incident occurred on Thursday in the same Cuyuni area.

It is suspected that the attack might have been coming from a criminal gang from Venezuela that operates mining camps close to the same area.

The GGMC officers were forced to abandon their operations and have since filed official reports with the Police and the Guyana Defence Force base in the area.

Guyanese miners in the same area have been complaining about attacks from the Venezuelan gangs on their mining camps.

A probe is underway.
