GGMC Prosecutor busted in $300,000 bribery sting

A 44-year-old mining officer of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission who serves as a Prosecutor for GGMC cases has found himself facing possible charges of his own after he was nabbed with $300,000 that was allegedly paid to him to drop a Court matter.

The man, Sherwin Crandon was held on Wednesday afternoon after a miner who was facing charges in Court for illegal mining approached the Police to inform them that the GGMC official had made a $300,000 demand for the case to be dropped.

With the Police monitoring the activities, the miner agreed to meet the GGMC Prosecutor yesterday afternoon and handed over the money to him.

The Police moved in and executed a search of the GGMC Prosecutor and found the $300,000 in his possession.

The allegations were put to him and he denied that he had demanded a bribe from the miner. However, he told the Police that he met the man to borrow the money from him.

The money was seized and the mining prosecutor was placed in Police custody. Charges are expected to be filed against him soon.
