Global community paying more attention to Guyana as gold and oil producing nation
Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources Simona Broomes believes there is an increasing global awareness of Guyana as both a gold producing country and as a future oil producing nation.
The Minister’s assessment follows her participation in the China Mining Congress and Expo 2016 held in Tianjin, China during the period September 22 – 25.
The Minister said arising out of participation in the Expo, there is scope for the accelerated promotion of Guyana across the world in order to accelerate bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the area of mining.
It is felt that Guyana can derive significant benefits from closer cooperation with the People’s Republic of China, in the areas of mining and mining technology.
The Congress and Expo also attracted delegations from the mining industry across several regions, affording the Guyana delegation the opportunity to engage various country representatives on issues of mining and mining technology.
Minister Broomes said of particular importance from Guyana’s perspective was the coincidence between the emphasis which the forum placed on the importance of both ‘greening’ and safety in the mining sector.
Arising out of the experience of the Congress and Expo it is felt that the creation of an enhanced understanding of the significance of a green economy should be a priority focus in Guyana’s mining sector.
The Minister and Guyanese delegation which included Guyana Geology and Mines staff Gordon Nestor, Unata DeFreitas and Lawrence Simon engaged in a series of bilateral engagements with Chinese entrepreneurs during the Congress and Expo which created the potential for cooperation between the Guyanese mining community and Chinese entrepreneurs.
As a follow-up to the Congress and Expo it is recommended that Guyana takes advantage of the potential afforded by the outcomes of these engagements with the Chinese entrepreneurs.
The Ministry of Natural Resources will be seeking to further investigate, through the embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Guyana, the full extent of the support which the local Gold mining sector can receive from China.
The delegation strongly recommends Guyana’s annual participation and its expanded involvement to include, among other things, the setting up of a Guyana Mining Booth at the 2017 event and exploring the possibility of joint venture arrangements involving Guyanese miners and Chinese investors.
