Christmas preparations in the East Coast Demerara communities of Good Hope and Lusignan were dampened on Saturday after a 29-year-old man was electrocuted while erecting a metal Christmas tree in the Lusignan area outside the home of a businessman during rainy conditions.

The dead youth has been identified as machinist, Deepak Ramdeen.

Ramdeen along with a group of men were in the process of erecting the 27-foot tall metal Christmas Tree when the star on top of the tree, came into contact with an electrical wire from a power pole.

A wave of electricity rushed through the metal tree, resulting in Ramdeen and threee other men receiving electrical shocks and being pitched to the ground.

All of the men were rushed to the hospital where the 29-year-old died while receiving treatment. The other men have been admitted with serious injuries to the Burns Unit of the hospital.

An investigation has been launched.
