The President David Granger administration has decided to ditched the plans by the previous government to construct a specialty hospital and instead use the funds that would have gone to that project to upgrade existing hospitals and health institutions across the country.

The decision was made at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting and announced earlier today by Minister of State Joe Harmon.

He said Guyana was already trying to recoup hundreds of millions of dollars that were lost in the project under the PPP government which made legal moves to recover the money after the contractor it hired failed to deliver on the project. Over US$4 Million was already spent on the project through a credit arrangement with India.

The new government is looking to use the remaining US$14 Million to develop and improve a number of the primary health care facilities across the country.

The APNU and AFC while in opposition had voted against the project and had warned the PPP government about the Surrendra company that it inked a deal with to build the hospital.

It was the same company that the PPP government was forced to take legal action against over the project.

Guyana’s new Minister of Health, Dr. George Norton has been visiting a number of hospitals and health clinics across  the country for a first hand look at the conditions health care professionals and patients have to face.

He has described the situation as “shocking” at many of the health facilities that were visited because of the poor condition of the facilities.
