After years of talk about a liberalised telecommunications sector, the Government and GTT inched closer to making that a reality today with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the planned liberalisation of the telecommunications market.
In a joint statement, the Government and GTT said that while not binding, the MoU represents a major step toward fully liberalizing Guyana’s
telecommunications market.
The parties have further agreed to continue discussions on all the outstanding issues with the objective of reaching a binding agreement.
Public Telecommunications Minister, Cathy Hughes in a statement said it is the coalition government that brought the country one step closer to realizing and achieving a fully open telecommunications market, after many years of delays.
GTT’s Chief Executive Officer, Justin Nedd in an interview with News Source said his company plans to continue to engage the government, adding that “I would say that it’s a matter of GTT and the Government working together. It should not be lost on anyone that this is the farthest that we have come on making progress and it has been a long time.”
Questioned about what a liberalised telecommunications market would mean for GTT, Mr. Nedd said he believes it creates a clearer market and allows his company to provide better and more efficient services. He said that it will also give consumers more choices and better technology.
Just last week, the GTT CEO committed his company to doing more this year to improve the quality of its service and products. He said GTT plans to remain in Guyana and building on the growth that it has made over the past 28 years.
