Government announces pedestrian and vehicle overpass for East Bank Demerara

Major upgrades are in the pipeline for the East Bank Public Road which will include the construction of pedestrian and vehicle overhead passes.

Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson announced the massive infrastructural plans on Friday as the government pushes for better mobility across the country.

He promised the installation of more lights, road markings and signs throughout the East Bank Corridor. Patterson said three pedestrian overpasses will be constructed at the Harbour Bridge, Eccles and Houston respectively.

A vehicle flyover will also be constructed at Diamond, that will connect the East Bank road to the main road into the Diamond Housing Scheme. Patterson expects that these upgrades will significantly reduce accidents and travel time.

The Minister said pedestrians continue to be the worst affected by traffic accidents along the country’s roadways.

“Saving a single life is most important,” he added while explaining that the locations for the pedestrian overhead passes were chosen after studies showed that the areas have a high flow of pedestrian movement on a daily basis. He  said studies are also being conducted on how mobility can be improved in the capital city. Works which started on the East Bank four lane highway expansion several years ago are slated for completion in July.

The Minister said two contractors are working on the section of the road between Providence and Herstelling and he expects that upon completion it will allow for a smoother flow of traffic and reduce accidents.
