Government approves $150 million for drainage works in Georgetown ahead of rainy period

Cabinet has given its approval for the funding and that paves the way for the execution of remedial drainage works around the city by the National Drainage Authority in some priority areas.

Government approves $150 million for drainage works in Georgetown ahead of rainy period

The sum of $150 million is to be spent on improving drainage in the Capital City as government looks to stave off the possibility of flooding during the upcoming May/June rainy season.

Cabinet has given its approval for the funding and that paves the way for the execution of remedial drainage works around the city by the National Drainage Authority in some priority areas.

Some of the works to be carried out include desilting, clearing of drains and culverts and repairs to pumps and sluices.

Some of the keys areas to be targeted include: Sussex Street, South and North Ruimveldt, the Railway Embankment, Sherriff and Lamaha Streets, Agricola and and Newtown, Kitty.

Works to be carried out include the desilting of the Sussex Street drain, clearing of culverts in North and South Ruimveldt, clearing of drains in Plum Park and repairs to sluices at Agricola and Lamaha Street

These works are expected to be completed by early May.

State Minister, Joe Harmon, told journalists that the drainage works move represents the first in a series of initiatives to be taken to rehabilitate drainage in the capital city.
