The Ministry of the Presidency this morning announced that President David Granger has accepted the resignation of Government Members of Parliament who are holders of dual citizenship.

The four who have resigned are Minister of State Joe Harmon, Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin, Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge and Minister of Public Service Dr. Rupert Roopnarine.

In a statement this morning, the President’s Office said the Government of Guyana is committed to the upholding of the Constitution of Guyana and by virtue, the March 22, 2019 ruling of the Court of Appeal on the No Confidence motion, which was brought against the Government.

The statement added that as of Monday, April 1, 2019, President David Granger, has received and accepted the resignation of all coalition Members of Parliament who are holders of dual citizenship.

It said these members will not be returning to Parliament when it reconvenes on April 11, 2019.

News Source understand that new roles in Government for the now former MPs will be examined as new MPs will likely take their spot and the portfolios they held will be shared with other Government Ministers.

President David Granger held discussions with his coalition partners before the resignations were issued and received.

The Constitution of Guyana prevents a holder of dual citizenship from serving in the Parliament of Guyana. The Opposition also has a number of dual citizens on its side.

On Monday, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo said the PPP’s dual citizenship MPs will be staying away from Parliament rather than resigning. The PPP has said it will be boycotting parliamentary sittings until the outcome of the appeals before the Caribbean Court of Justice.
