Government seeks meeting with US Congressman after rebuke

Hours after a top US congressman made sharp statements condemning what he calls intolerance and racially motivated issues in Guyana and promises to deal with the issues at the highest level of his Democratic party, Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips has called for a meeting with the Congressman.

In a statement late Sunday, the Prime Minister’s Office said it has taken note of the remarks by Congressman Jeffries and find them to be “appalling”.

“We are disappointed that the Congressman has allowed himself to be negatively influenced by individuals who are adamant in destroying our beautiful country by instigating violence and division amongst our people.  We call on the Congressman to desist from joining with these individuals in creating chaos in our communities at home and in the Diaspora. We invite the Congressman Jeffries to have discussions with us on matters of mutual interest,” Prime Minister office said.

The statement from the Government rejected the statements made by the APNU+AFC representatives, many of whom spoke at the rally in New York.

“We wish to place on record that we reject ALL the statements delivered at today’s march and rally. The APNU continues to propagate racial division and tension in Guyana and in the Diaspora through the dissemination of inaccurate information about the Government of Guyana and by extension, the People’s Progressive Party,” The statement noted.

The Prime Minister’s statement said that the government continues to govern in the interest of all Guyanese and that there is evidence to show that the government upholds democratic principles, adheres to equitable practices, embraces diversity and inclusivity and promotes transparency at all levels.
