Govt. grants approval for duty-free concessions for 300 senior teachers

The Government today announced that it has given approval for 300 senior teachers from across the country to be granted duty- free concessions.

At the post-cabinet press briefing today, Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joe Harmon, announced that the beneficiaries will be Headteachers and their Deputies of Grade A and B schools, Headteachers of Grade C, D and E schools and senior masters and Heads of Departments of the Cyril Potter College of Education and technical schools will be the primary beneficiaries.

Qualifying teachers would have to be members of the Guyana Teachers Union, be in their senior position for at least three years and have at least three more years remaining in the teaching system.

Mr. Harmon said Cabinet considered the issue at its last meeting and granted full approval for the Guyana Revenue Authority to go ahead with the granting of the concessions.

The majority of teachers who will benefit from the initiative will be from the Region Four area.

The granting of the duty-free concessions forms part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) last year.

Mr. Harmon said the approval caters for the granting of concessions for motor vehicles with capacities up to 1800cc, outboard engines of 75 horsepower for persons in the riverine areas, and All-Terrain Vehicles for eligible persons in the Hinterland.
