Govt. satisfying business needs over nation’s health in COVID-19 fight -Opposition Leader

The Opposition Leader has described the government’s decision to reduce the coronavirus curfew hours and reopen the airports as “reckless”, since the moves are coming at a time when the number of cases in the country are climbing steadily.

Mr. Harmon told a media conference this morning that the Government may be going against the advice of professionals who are involved in the COVID-19 fight.

“The airport was announced to be reopened to receive commercial traffic on October 11, 2020. These measures are announced at a time when we are seeing daily increase in the number of confirmed cases and deaths from the virus. As of yesterday, the confirmed cases stood at 2894 while the number of deaths was 85. This response by the government appears contrary to professional advice and places the need to satisfy business interests over the health of our people. In this environment, we urge Guyanese to take their individual safety measures”.

The Government has defended its decision to reduce the curfew hours and reopen the airports with the Prime Minister indicating that it wants to give persons more time to go about their business, while practicing the safety guidelines.

The Opposition Leader said he would advise citizens to heed the advice to wear masks and avoid physical contact.

“Wear a mask in public and even at workplaces where social distancing rules are violated, practice safe social distancing, avoid too much physical contact with people. wash hands regularly and use a hand sanitizer”, the Opposition Leader advised.

The Guyana Defence Force will be deploying over 500 soldiers to join the Police in its efforts to enforce the COVID-19 measures. Joint operations are to be done across the country.
