GPL facing power generation deficit; Blackouts likely

The Guyana Power and Light Company is advising customers in Demerara and Berbice that they could experience periods of service disruptions as the company faces a deficit of 23 megawatts of power in its system.

In a statement, GPL explained that due to a defective transformer at its Onverwagt, Berbice substation, it is unable to export 6.9 MW of power to the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System.

Additionally, a 5.5 MW generator at the Canefield Power Plant is unavailable because of scheduled maintenance.

In the Demerara area, At the Kingston Power Plant, a 6.9 MW unit is unavailable due to a defective alternator, which had to be sourced overseas, the company said.

GPL indicated that the alternator has arrived, and repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the week.

The unit will return to full operation by Monday, September 9, 2019,

But the company said that at the Garden-of-Eden power station, a 4MW power supply is unavailable as the company is awaiting the arrival of replacement parts for the defective components there.

The company has indicated that it will be issuing public advisories for those areas that may be affected by any power outages.

Just recently, several areas experienced blackouts because of a disruption in the underwater cable between the Kingston and Vreed-en-hoop stations.
