The Guyana Public Service Union said today has written to the Public Service Ministry (PSM) once again to begin negotiations for wages, salaries, and allowances, and other working conditions of service for Public Servants for the years 2020 and 2021.
The government last year approved a 7% across-the-board pay hike for Public Servants without consulting the Public Service Union despite numerous efforts by the Union for negotiations.
The Union has complained bitterly that there has been no response to its requests for meetings since the new government took office more than a year ago.
Still not satisfied with the 7% salary increase imposed on public servants by the government, the Union wants a sit down with the administration to discuss salary and other matters related to public servants.
“The Union requested that these outstanding negotiations for the years 2020 and 2021 commence early in January 2022. Negotiations for 2022 would be strategically taken on board during negotiations for the years 2020 and 2021,” the GPSU said in a brief statement.
The GPSU has complained that the actions of the government to impose the increase without consultations constitute a violation of Article 147(3) of the Constitution of, Section 23 (1) of the Trade Union Recognition Act 1997, International Labour Organization Convention which was unanimously ratified by the Parliament and is currently in force.
The GPSU labeled the 7% increase as heartless and unconscionable in light of the rising cost of living and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
