Granger and Jagdeo agree GECOM must make declaration; President says recount irregularities will form grounds for election petition

Following a request of the Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission, retired Justice Claudette Singh, President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo had a brief conversation this morning on the current electoral situation and the way forward.

The Chairman’s request was triggered by a suggestion of the Government nominated GECOM Commissioners during the Commission’s meeting this morning.

In a statement after the telephone meeting, the President’s office said that the President said he has recognised that the Commission has a legal obligation as a result of the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal, to proceed with a declaration.

The statement added that “President Granger said that notwithstanding that declaration, the APNU+ AFC coalition maintains that the anomalies and irregularities which have been uncovered during the recount process cannot be accepted and will form the grounds for an election petition.”

In another section of the press, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo was quoted as saying that the two agreed that there must be a declaration of the results before there could be any other conversation about the way forward.

Today marks five months since the 2nd of March elections. The Court of Appeal recently agreed with a High Court ruling that the tabulation figures from the vote recount must be used to compile the final report for the election declaration. Those undeclared figures have the the PPP/C ahead of the APNU+AFC by just over 15,000 votes.
