Granger condemns “unlawful” arrest of Jones; Warns PPP about political harassment

Leader of the People’s National Congress and Chairman of the APNU, former President David Granger has accused the governing People’s Progressive Party of political harassment over the arrest of former Director of Sport, Christopher Jones.

In a statement, Mr. Granger condemned what he called the “unwarranted and unlawful deprivation of the rights and freedom of Mr. Christopher Jones”.

He said the PPP must bring an immediate end to its season of politically inspired harassment.

Mr. Granger said the actions of ranks of the Guyana Police Force, who blatantly disregarded an order of the court and unlawfully entered the premises of Mr. Christopher Jones; arrested him and illegally seized personal property, must be stoutly condemned and immediately investigated.

The PNCR, he said, will not allow this type of harassment of former public servants or any citizen by agents of the state to stand.

Mr. Granger called on all Guyanese to join them to strongly condemn the “abuse of state power and the persecution of an innocent man”

The PNCR wants an immediate cessation of harassment and politically inspired ‘witch-hunting’ of current and former public servants.

Mr. Granger made it clear that his party, of which Jones is a member, stands firmly with the former Director of Sport and will do everything to ensure that his rights and freedom are no longer violated.
