Great niece emerges as key suspect in murder of 85-year-old Berbice woman

After initially telling Police investigators that she was a victim of an armed robbery that saw her 85-year-old great aunt being murdered by two robbers, the great niece of the elderly woman has now admitted to investigators that she was part of the plot that saw her aunt being stabbed to death.

Based on information gathered by the investigators, there is serious doubt on the story that the great niece, Roshanie Basdeo, initially presented to investigators.

News Source understands that investigators decided to keep the woman in custody and question her more about the incident. It was during the questioning, that Basdeo reportedly admitted that she was part of a plot that was hatched by a man who lives in the area to rob her aunt and beat her to death.

Initially, the woman claimed that the home was attacked by two armed bandits who tied her up, while they robbed her great aunt of her valuables and a quantity of money.

She now reportedly claims that there was just one man who worked along with her in carrying out the crime.

While she has named and provided a description of the other man, investigators have been questioning her in more detail about what took place and how many persons were really involved.

A senior Police Official while not wanting to confirm or deny that the woman has confessed the crime, told News Source this evening that there is one person in custody and before the end of this week, charges could be laid in the matter.

85-year-old West Berbice resident, Sumintra Sawh was found stabbed to death in her home early Monday morning.

Her great niece worked as her caregiver and was the only other family member with the woman, when the murder took place.

The investigations are ongoing.
