GT&T invests $60 Million in University of Guyana

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Guyana which will see the company investing $60 Million in the University over the next three years.

The MOU was signed by GT&T Chief Executive Officer RK Sharma and Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Jacob  Opadeyi. According to Mr. Sharma, under this Memorandum, GT & T shall provide sponsorship funds to the University in the amount of $20 million annually for a period of three years distributed across sub projects which will include the delivery of 2 Mbps of dedicated Internet bandwidth to the Centre for Information Technology(CIT) at the University at an overall cost of one million two hundred thousand dollars monthly and the Provision of $4.4 million annually to fund capital works identified by the university.

Additionally, the agreement will also see the retooling and refurbishing of the CIT laboratory inclusive of the replacement of the 57 computers at a cost of $10 million and the provision of additional equipment (router & access point ) to enhance the delivery and distribution of the band width.

 GT&T will also provide a closed user group service package to University’s administrative staff “with a view of offering savings and greater value for money.”

The company has also given a commitment to provide more opportunities for students through its work and study internship programme. 

The GT&T Chief Executive Officer said his company remains committed to strengthening and building the social sector in Guyana and will continue with that commitment. He pointed out that “as we at GT & T reviewed our contribution to the various sectors of our social economy We felt that support to this premier educational institution should be a priority as we recognize that such support benefits a wide cross-section of students”, adding that “today’s signing of this Memorandum of Understanding between the two institution represent the highest dollar value commitment we have given to any agency”.

The UG Vice Chancellor thanked the company for its commitment to the University and its development.
