Gunmen continued their attack on the business community on Wednesday afternoon just hours after the Guyana Police Force indicated that it would be beefing up patrols in several areas to deal with an increase in robberies.

Two gunmen attacked and robbed the Fullworks Motor Spares store at Good Hope on the East Coast of Demerara just after 2 o’ clock on Wednesday afternoon.

The manager of the business said the men made off with a substantial amount of money believed to be in the millions of dollars. He said “the entire day’s sale was stolen”.

According to the Manager, he had just left the business for home when he received a call from staff members that they had just been robbed. He said he hurried back to the East Coast business after alerting the Police. The manager told News Source that the Police were quick in their response but the gunmen had already escaped.

One of the employees who was attacked said the two men walked into the large auto spares warehouse requesting specific car parts. He said he was accompanying one of the men through the warehouse in search of the car part he requested, when the man suddenly turned around and lashed him to the face with a gun.

He said as he fell to the ground, he saw the other gunman making his way to the cashier area where he demanded money. Another employee was also lashed to the face with a gun and had to be rushed to the hospital with a suspected broken nose. A customer who was in the store at the time was also attacked and robbed of money and a cellphone.

According to employees, the men acted quickly and hurried out of the complex and made their escape in a waiting car where a third man was spotted. The Police were contacted and immediately sent patrols to several areas along the East Coast corridor.

A number of female employees of the store were left shaken by the ordeal and were seen clutching to each other and crying after the incident. The business owner said he could not understand how his business came under attack.

Earlier on Wednesday, Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell called on business owners to be more “security conscious” as he said the Force has noted a spike in armed robberies over the past few weeks.

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called on the Police Force to put together a comprehensive security plan to deal with the attack on businesses and the rising crime situation. The Commissioner said whenever there is an increase in criminal activity in Guyana, “everybody turn Commissioner of Police”.

An investigation into the robbery at the Fullworks Motor Spares at Good Hope, is ongoing.
