Less than two weeks after a High Court Judge ruled that there was enough evidence to extradite an American fugitive to the US, the extradition has taken place.
US Wanted man, Troy Anthony Thomas, was extradited to the US today. He was arrested just over a year ago after hiding out here for a number of years.
He made several efforts to block his extradition through the Courts, but all of those efforts failed and the Court made an order earlier this month, paving the way for his extradition.
The New York man is waned for the 2011 murder of another New York resident.
It is believed that he ran to Guyana just after committing the murder and started a whole new life here.
He was arrested during a police raid at the home he shared with his girlfriend, after a tip was received.
In a statement this afternoon, the US embassy announced that he will be in the custody of the New York Police Department, and tomorrow morning he will appear before an American judge in court, to face charges.
The Embassy said Thomas’s extradition reflects over one year of close coordination between the Government of Guyana and the U.S. Embassy.
The Embassy added that Extraditions are an important law enforcement tool in fighting transnational criminal organizations. It said the extradition of Thomas has created a new precedent.
The new US Ambassador Saran-Ann Lynch said “The Government of Guyana’s actions over the past year clearly indicates its dedication to law and order and established norms of international criminal justice – Guyana is moving in the right direction. Establishing a roadmap for future extraditions, bringing a fugitive to justice, making Guyana a safer place for Guyanese citizens – this is the best example of rule of law existing in Guyana.”
