Guyana Goldfields workers end strike; Company to meet with Govt. and Union officials

The Guyana Goldfields company today announced that the strike by some of its workers has ended at the Aurora mine and the company is restarting its operations in full.

The strike went on for three days with the workers pressing the company to look into several of their concerns. Some of those concerns centred around the workers wanting to become unionized to concerns about severance packages as a new company is set to take over some of the mining operations at Aurora.

The company in an earlier statement said the workers had misunderstood several issues.

In its statement today, the company said the three-day strike action resulted in approximately 22,500 tonnes of ore not being processed, but the company’s full year production guidance remains unaffected at 145,000-160,000 ounces of gold.

Chief operating officer, Suresh Kalathil, said “Personnel are being re-mobilized and the site is ramping back up to normal operations in a phased and safe manner. The Company has agreed to a dialogue with employee representatives and Government authorities to resolve any outstanding issues in full compliance with Guyanese labour law.”

News Source understands that the President of the National Mine Workers Union was allowed to go into the interior mining site to meet with the workers and management.

The company and the union have now agreed to continue their engagements as the strike ends and work restarts.

Officials from the Department of Labour are expected to travel in to the mining site to meet with workers and company officials on Monday.
