Guyana government offers congratulations to new Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago

The Government of Guyana on Wednesday expressed heartfelt congratulations to the new government in Trinidad and Tobago being headed by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

Guyana’s  Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, told a post Cabinet media briefing that it is with great anticipation that Guyana looks forward to continuing the already good relations it has with the twin-island Republic.

Guyana has a long history of co-operation with Trinidad and Tobago and currently sources a large volume of its fuel from the oil producing nation.

The country voted in general elections on Monday which saw the five year People’s Partnership coalition government, headed by Kamla Persad – Bissesar, being removed from office.

According to Trotman, the Guyana Government has taken note of the speedy declaration of results in Trinidad and Tobago.

The preliminary results of the elections were announced on the same night and Ms. Persad-Bissessar conceded defeat just after. It took four days before Guyana’s preliminary results were made known during the last elections in May.

Just after the May 11 elections, President David Granger met with then T&T PM Kamla Persad– Bissesar where several commitments were exchanged.

When asked about these pledges on Wednesday, the governance Minister said they were not made between heads of states but rather between countries and as a consequence they still stand, even with a change in government.

He said Guyana will continue to deepen its engagements with Trinidad and Tobago and said a government team will visit the Island in the near future to meet with the new People’s National Movement (PNM) government.

Dr. Rowley and his Attorney General were sworn in this afternoon.

President David Granger and Dr. Rowley is like to meet at the upcoming UN general Assembly later this month in the U.S.
