The United Nations General Assembly is set to rebuke Russia today over its invasion of Ukraine and demand that Moscow stop the fighting and withdraw its military forces.

The move by the UN aims to diplomatically isolate Russia at the world body.

Guyana is set to vote in favour of the resolution, according to Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Carolyn Rodrigues- Birkett.

On Tuesday, she told the United Nations that the situation in Ukraine represents a global threat.

“The aggression against Ukraine is a threat to the region and countries everywhere. The Government of Guyana supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to bring a speedy resolution to the situation in Ukraine and cease the threat to international peace and security. In this regard, the Government of Guyana fully supports the resolution before us.” Birkett told the United Nations General Assembly.

While General Assembly resolutions are non-binding, they carry political weight.

Nearly half of the 193-member General Assembly, including Guyana have signed on as co-sponsors of a draft resolution ahead of a vote today as Guyana said it remains concerned over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The Government of Guyana is gravely concerned over the recent military intervention by Russia in violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy. Guyana deplores the threat or use of force in the conduct of international relations and urges a peaceful resolution of the differences that currently exist, in consonance with the rule of international law and the provisions of the United Nations Charter,” Ambassador Birkett said.

Birkett told the General Assembly that the current military action in Ukraine is contrary to the principles of respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty and the non-interference in the internal affairs of another sovereign state
