The Guyana Civil Defence Commission is working along with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Authority to monitor an oil tanker that is tilted and appears to be sinking between Venezuela and Trinidad.

In a statement, the CDC said the impact of the spill can affect other countries in the hemisphere and the situation is being closely monitored from Guyana.

According to the CDC, if the need arises, Guyana’s National Oil Spill Contingency Plan will be activated and the committee will be tasked with conducting analysis, assessments and necessary response measures to mitigate any adverse effect on Guyana.

The CDC is urging fishing and sea-going vessels to be on the lookout for any sighting of oil spills and to report immediately to MARAD Georgetown Lighthouse on telephone number 226-9871.

Trinidad and Tobago recently dispatched an assessment team to the area where the vessel is tilted. The Government of Trinidad has been pressing the Government of Venezuela for more information on the oil tanker which is believed to have more than 1.3 million barrels of oil stored in its tank.
