The wedding vow of “For Better, For Worse” may have been taken very seriously by a Guyanese husband and wife, who were busted at New York’s JFK Airport with cocaine in their stomachs.
According to US Court documents seen by News Source, the couple, Kurt Bruney and Maria Bruney, arrived in New York on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Georgetown on the 23rd September.
The husband was initially pulled over for security checks just after the couple arrived, however, checks of his luggage came up empty handed.
But according to US Customs and Border Patrol, the man started to act nervous and began sweating profusely while his hands and legs started to shake. He was presented with an x-ray consent form and agreed to have the x-ray done.
It was at that stage that his wife, Maria Bruney, admitted to the Customs and Border Patrol agents that they had both swallowed pellets of cocaine.
After being told what his wife had said, the man admitted that he had swallowed several cocaine pellets. He immediately asked to use the restroom, according to the Court documents, and passed thirty-four pellets initially. The contents of one of the pellets was tested positive for cocaine.
He was placed under arrest and the x-ray examination revealed the presence of more cocaine pellets in his stomach. He admitted that he had swallowed approximately 220 cocaine pellets and was expected to be paid US$6000 for his drug trafficking effort.
The man eventually passed out 218 cocaine pellets weighing just over 3 pounds.
Meanwhile in a separate room, the wife, Maria, admitted to swallowing in excess of 50 cocaine filled pellets. She passed out more than 75 cocaine filled pellets after she was placed under arrest. Just like her husband, she was charged with the trafficking of cocaine into the United States.
Both remain in separate US Federal custody awaiting their trial. News Source understands that investigators in Guyana are probing the couple’s ties locally and the persons they might have worked along with in their efforts to work as cocaine mules.
The couple reportedly lived on the East Coast of Demerara, which now appears to be a hotspot for wannabe cocaine mules.
