GWI receives national standard certificate for its laboratories

The Guyana Water Incorporated today received the official certificate from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, showing that the water company has attained the Guyana Standard “GYS 170” for the operation of its laboratory.

The certification, according to the GNBS, demonstrates that the GWI laboratory has implemented an effective system in its operation which guarantees that the quality and technical aspects are fulfilled.

The certification also points to GWI improving its laboratory standards.

The company’s Managing Director, Dr. Richard Van West Charles, said the certification marks a good day for GWI and Guyana.

He explained that this is the first time that the Water Authority is being granted the standard certification and it forms part of the company’s efforts to improve the quality of water that is being provided to consumers.

“If we are producing a product and if we are distributing a product, we must be able to say whether that product is safe or not. And that’s the main purpose of trying to ensure that the laboratory and its processes and competencies are up to scratch so when we say its safe, it is safe and when we say there is an issue, we know that there is an issue”, he said.

The Managing Director explained that GWI started the journey to get its lab certified just over two years ago and he is pleased with the commitment that has been given by staff members to meet the certification standard.

He also said a number of mini-labs have been set up across the country and more have been budgeted for the next year.

Dr. Van West Charles also used the opportunity to remind the public to report leakages in the system to the company in a timely manner.  He said while GWI may distribute a safe product from its end, leakages and breaks in the system could result in that quality not being maintained before it gets to your tap.
