Harmon questions joinder parties sudden “noise” over Parliamentary Committees

The Joinder parties which have a single seat in the National Assembly are not happy that they have been left off of all of the Parliamentary Committees and the main Opposition in Parliament doesn’t appear to share their worry.

Over the weekend, the joinder parties representative in the National Assembly, Lennox Shuman voiced his concerns that the PPP and the APNU+AFC have taken up all of the seats on the Committees.

But today, Opposition Leader Joe Harmon said the process of selecting representatives for the respective committees is completed.

“We have gone through the process of electing a Speaker, we have gone through the process of electing a Deputy Speaker, we have gone through the process of appointing members for these committees and appointing chairperson for these committees’.

The Opposition Leader said he finds it strange that at this juncture when the respective committees have commenced working, “this noise is being made”.

He said it appears as though there is a hidden voice behind that noise, ‘that is seeking to seat an extra place for the PPP in these committees’.

Harmon said it would appear as though there are efforts to do so at the expense of the APNU/AFC and he will not allow it.

There are 9 Standing Committees with three of them being headed by Opposition MPs.

Mr. Shuman serves as the Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly, a position that was usually reserved for the largest opposition in Parliament. The PPP used its majority and with support from Shuman, ensured that he landed in that Deputy Speaker spot.

The Opposition Leader is responsible for the selection of Opposition representatives on the Committees.

While Mr. Shuman sits on the Opposition side of the National Assembly, he has openly supported the PPP on a number of issues and currently works for the PPP government as one of its advisors.
