High Court orders Public Service Credit Union to call special general meeting and elections by 24th October

The Guyana Public Service Cooperative Credit Union has been ordered by the Court to begin preparations for a special general meeting by the 24th October.

At the High Court this morning, Justice Navendra Singh handed down the order in his decision for the credit union to call the special general meeting and to publish a notice for the holding of the meetings within ten days to elect new office bearers for the Committee of Management of the Credit Union.

The ruling is being seen as a win for ousted Chairman of the Credit Union Trevor Benn. Many of his supporters and credit union members have been pushing for the special meeting to once again elect him to head the credit union.

Benn was removed earlier this year as Chairman of the Credit Union following a no-confidence vote by members of the Management Committee. A new Chairperson, Karen Vansluytman Corbin has since taken over the reins of the Credit Union.

Following the no-confidence vote against Mr. Benn, three members of the Credit Union, Mehalai Mc Almont, Keith Marks and Natasha Clements approached the High Court for several declarations including an order to invalidate several meetings which were called following Benn’s removal.

The applicants who were represented by Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde had submitted to the Court that after a no-confidence motion was passed against Benn at a Special Committee Meeting on April 21, he was removed as the GPSCCU’s Chairman, but not as a member of its Committee of Management.

As a result, they said, the Vice Chairman, Patrick Mentore was empowered by the credit union’s Chief Co-operative Development Officer (ag), via a letter dated May 4 and by the GPSCCU’s Rules, to perform the duties of Chairman until a new chairman has been elected.

The applicants pointed out that although Mentore in exercise of that function had informed the Committee of Management and the Chief Executive Officer of the Credit Union that he is receipt of a petition signed by members of the Credit Union for the holding of a special general meeting, he was being ignored by the Committee of Management and the CEO although he explained at length that the petition was in keeping with the Credit Union rules and it was legal.

Benn and Members of the Committee who were elected with him have been at loggerheads since earlier this year with his colleagues accusing him of taking credit for most of the work being done at the entity.

They also claimed that Benn wanted to hold the position of Chairman and CEO of the Credit Union.

Benn has been credited with turning around the credit union and introducing a number of initiatives that have been welcomed by its membership. He is expected to seek election for the position of Chairman again.
