Hughes asks DPP to discontinue private charges against Chief Elections Officer

Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes, who is representing the interests of the Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, has written to the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting that she discontinues the private criminal charges that he is facing.

Back in July, Mr. Lowenfield was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and misconduct in public office.

He was granted bail in the sum of $450,000 on the private charges which were filed against him by representatives of the People’s Progressive Party and The New Movement party.

The charges were related to a final report that Lowenfield had compiled for the GECOM Chairperson following a ruling in one of the election cases.

His Attorney now wants the Court to throw out all of those charges before his next expected Court appearance which is slated for next week.

In his letter, Mr. Hughes is asking the DPP to review the statements made against Lowenfield with a view of discontinuing the charges.

Late this afternoon, the Public Relations Officer at the Office of the DPP, Liz Rahaman confirmed that the DPP was in receipt of the letter. However, she pointed out that none of the statements or documents related to the charge were forwarded to the DPP.

At the last Court hearing, the Attorney representing the PPP and TNM representatives told the Court that he was compiling hundreds of statements.

It is unclear whether he ever completed that compilation.

The DPP recently discontinued private criminal charges that were filed against the Chairperson of the Elections Commission by supporters of the APNU+AFC.

News Source understands that when those charges were filed, the GECOM Chair’s Attorney also wrote the DPP requesting the charges be discontinued. She also ensured there were copies of all the statements in the matter.

The charges against the GECOM Chair were discontinued before she ever set heels in the Courthouse.
