Illegal aircraft found at Yupukari has bogus U.S registration number

As the probe continues into the discovery of an illegal aircraft at Guyana’s Yupukari airstrip in Region 9, a check of the registration number for the plane has revealed that the number is a bogus one.

Minister of State, Joe Harmon, told a media briefing on Thursday that investigators from the Joint Services and the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit are continuing their probe.

He said so far, the probe has revealed that the registration number painted on the aircraft, N767Z, is a bogus number that does not belong to the aircraft, since another aircraft that is currently being operated in the US carries the same number.

Mr. Harmon said the discovery of the parked aircraft was made by ranks of the Police Force and Guyana Defence Force who carry out regular patrol in the area.  It was found almost hidden under a clump of bush and camouflage material.

The twin engine Cessna aircraft was found on Wednesday morning, with no crew in site. The GDF had received a report of the plane being spotted in the area, the day before.

Investigators from the GDF, Police Force and CANU are all in the area conducting the probe. They suspect that the plane may have been used to ferry drugs and other illegal items into Guyana.
