Irfaan Ali turns to full Court of Appeal over fraud charges

With his latest effort to be granted a stay in the fraud charges being thrown out by Appeal Court Judge, Dawn Gregory, PPP Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali is now turning to the full Court of Appeal.

Ali gave notice of appeal this morning as he appeared before the Chief Magistrate for the continuation of the fraud case against him.

He is facing 19 fraud charges related to the sale of state lands when he served as Housing Minister under the PPP Civic government.

Ali has always denied the charges. He did not offer any comment to the media as he left the Courthouse in the company of supporter Peter Ramsaroop and his Attorneys.

The decision by High Court Judge, then later Appeal Court Judge to not grant a stay of the charges, forced the case to be returned to the Magistrates’ Court for hearing.

The matter is being prosecuted by the Special Organised Crime Unit, which carried out several months of investigations into the sale of state lands to former government officials at prices far below the market value.
