Jagdeo accuses GECOM “elements” and APNU+AFC of attempts at electoral fraud

PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo met this morning with members of the Elections Observer team from the OAS headed by former Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

According to a statement from the PPP, during the meeting, Mr. Jagdeo raised a number of issues of concern. He told the OAS that there appears to be an orchestrated and coordinated attempt by some “elements” at the Guyana Elections Commission to perpetrate electoral fraud along with the APNU+AFC coalition.

He said that could subvert the will of the Guyanese people.

The People’s Progressive Party has rejected the declaration of the Region Four results on the grounds that a full verification was not completed when the declaration was made. The party has since turned to the Court to force the Commission to return to the verification process for Region Four before a final declaration is made.

Jagdeo used the meeting to express concern over the actions by the Chief Elections Officer to begin preparations for a final declaration, inviting the GECOM Chair to set a meeting.

The Elections Commission has since indicated that it will not be flouting the laws of Guyana and will not set a meeting while matters are before the Courts.

Jagdeo said the verification process was running smoothly with over 400 statements of poll verified via a spreadsheet system when variations appeared.

The PPP objected and a decision was made to turn to a statement by statement verification for the remaining SoPs. That process was never completed as GECOM suspended the operation and it never got restarted.

The PPP has come under criticism for its members storming the Region Four Returning Officers office following his decision to announce the declarations. The verification matter is now before the Court.
