Jagdeo begins consultations for GECOM Chairman nominees

Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, has started consultations with Civil society as he seeks to come up with six nominees for the Guyana Elections Commission Chairman position.

November 30, 2016 would have marked the last day for Dr. Steve Surujbally as Chairman of the Elections Commission.

The Law caters for the Opposition Leader to come up with six nominees for the post and submit those names to the President. The President would have to choose from among those six nominees. If he is not pleased with them, then the Opposition leader would have to submit six new nominees.

The Opposition has decided to consult with as many public and private organisations as it could and hear their recommendations for the top elections job.

It has so far been very tightlipped about some of the possible nominees.

Mr. Jagdeo is hoping to complete his nomination process within the coming weeks, so that the position could be filled at the earliest.
